If the wheels are that bad you may not be able to get them "done" the first time. Going crazy wirh cleaners and abrasives will only make things worse in the long run. Treat your wheels like you treat the car's paint. There are lots of high quality wheel cleaners out there, PS21, Sonax gels come to mind. If you are anal (like me) try devoting a 1/2 day just for the wheels. Remove a wheel, lay it flat and go to work on it front and back. You can easily spend an hour per wheel. After cleaning coat both sides with a wax. I find the non canubra waxes last longer. Sometimes I use cheap glaze and wax for extra durablity (again, think paint). If you wax you will find the wheels will come clean with just car soap. Wheel cleaner way only be needed with a few tough spots. Here I use a cheap car soap (detergent will strip your wax) diluted about half the amount you would use for the car body. I do this only onece or twice a year (spring if only once). When I do this I also rotate my tires and save $40!
