at least if you have original Sachs.
I just did the rear shocks on our salt belt 2004 9-5. At 80k miles the original shocks were getting weaker and the rear was sagging. Removal of the upper nut was easy in spite of the rust: sprayed liquid wrench on the nut and left them overnight. Didn't even wire brush the threads. spring compressor on the spring to reduce pressure on the nut. 7mm socket on the tip of the shock with a ratchet (had to carefully force that on over the rust). Vice grip on the locknut (you are going to replace that nut anyway). Let the ratchet end rest on the bench and lever against that with the vicegrips to ratchet off the nut... piece of cake... took off both upper nuts in less than 10 minutes (not counting the soaking)... the second one, I did half of it without compressing the spring (forgot)... just a little stiffer... the nut will clean up the threads. did the same on 18 year old shocks on our 1993...
No damage to the shock (don't use vicegrips on the shock itself) - it could now easily be reinstalled. A picture is worth 1000 words. I will post one later.
(otoh getting the original O2 sensor off our 1989 is a whole other story! definitely not a piece of cake!)
