+1 on checking play. There should be not axial or radial play on the turbo center shaft. When you reach into the compressor outlet you will feel a shaft and a nut on the end. You should feel no play side to side or in and out. Side to side is more likely.
You can replace the turbo yourself. You can actually rebuild it yourself. You can buy a new center section, or you can buy a complete kit for $100 or less and replace the seals and bearings and put it back in. there are a couple of good YouTube videos that are quite good.
