radio and CD issues

I have a 2000 wagon that will accept CDs and will eject CDs but will not play them and the display, if I push the CD button, claims no CD to be there. After searching everything on this BB the best solution I found was to replace the CD portion of the radio. Stupidly, I ended up purchasing 2 units off ebay. Of course these were surely not divorced from their cars (both sellers said all that was needed was the security code. I know security codes have nothing to do with this system but only thought I needed the CD portion so didn't care.)I have replaced the CD portion and the same thing happens. CD goes in but the head unit doesn't play it and states there isn't a CD but it will eject the CD without any problems.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might look at at this point? I have looked everywhere for a schematic on this radio in order to trace the circuitry to the CD player but I can't find one. I'm assuming a connection of some sort that keeps power reaching the drive motor and spinning the CD, but that is a nearly blind guess.
Thanks for your help.
Dan
