As long as the hangers are okay... Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Fri, 28 Oct 2011 09:23:22 In Reply to: muffler rust, jeff in MD, Fri, 28 Oct 2011 07:58:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The outer shell of the rear muffler on my '01 completely fell off on the highway in a BIG chunk (oops) around 175k. Once you get to the inner shell it's almost like having a new muffler. It'll last a while, especially because the outer holey shell isn't holding moisture against the inner shell anymore.
My problem was the hangers though. The rust ate away the welds and the rear muffler started drooping about 6" low in the bumper cutout. After a few varying failed attempts to tuck it back up with coat hangers and stuff I bought a used low-mileage muffler on eBay and had a muffler shop weld it on.
