(1) while trying to put the spring and plunger back in, I dropped them! the spring I got easily with a telescoping magnet but the plastic plunger...it got caught down below between what I think would be called the generator mount and head cover (or maybe lower). could just barely see it through the side opening! ended up having to take the upper pulley off, belt tensioner off, then loosen the 3 gen mount bolts so I could pry it away from the head enough to get the flex grabbers down in there. I was blessed as it didnt take long to get it with them with a larger opening. I was sure sweating it for a while!
(2) so..."while I was in there" I went ahead and changed out the upper and center pulleys which I have had on the shelf for a while and was going to replace at about 200k miles (now has 179k). even though they seemed mostly OK. upper one maybe was starting to rattle ever so slightly. the center is the original and was fine (wasnt used between 40k and about 130k miles with short belt) I went ahead and replaced them since I had them off. had to dremel off my 8mm hex L allen for the belt tensioner and used the old masking tape on the center bolt trick from you guys on this BB. wasnt easy but it all worked out. and now I have the confidence that I can do all the pulleys myself. whew!!
