Rear Shock Replacement and Spacer Observations Posted by Tulsaab [Email] (#31) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Tulsaab) on Sat, 31 Dec 2011 16:28:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Just got done doing the rear shock replacement on my '07 Aero Sportcombi. After a lot of deliberation, I wound up going with the Bilstein HD's and the 1" spacers from Jeff here on the board (worked great! Thanks Jeff!).
Here's a couple of observations:
- The bolt holding the rear shock on to the hub required a bit of heat and a go with my Harbor Freight electric impact gun, but wasn't too bad. 140ft lbs of torque is tough to tighten when you're on the ground, though!
- The nut on top of the strut assy came off relatively easily - just let it soak in PBlaster for about 10 min and used a 17mm wrench on the nut, and an 7mm (i think?) socket on the nut, and it turned alright.
- Both Rear Shocks had 65k on them and were completely shot.
- After the Bilsteins and the spacers, i'm now just slightly above ride height for the Aero.
Haven't gone on a long drive yet, but i'm sure it's significantly better now. All in all, not a bad job, and with the 70 degree day in Oklahoma, couldn't ask for better weather, either.
