need valve keepers

I bought a 2001 2.3L wagon with 125k miles on it. #3 exhaust valve is 40% burned away, no compression! Don't know how this happened.
The mechanic says, in addition to a new exhaust valve, he needs valve keepers to rebuild the head.
Why would he need new keepers? Shouldn't the old ones be good to use? I've looked everywhere, Eeuroparts, other parts houses, the dealer, etc. and no one has valve keepers.
Do I really need new valve keepers?
If I do, would used ones work?
Where can I get some?
Thanks everyone.
