Hi,
I'm also having issues with the auto-leveling on my '04 Aero, DESPITE the gravity sensors having been replaced, twice, just to make extra sure it wasn't the replacement parts that were faulty. The wiring harness at the rear was also replaced. The diagnostics still point towards rear sensor failure. My saab specialist traced the wiring all the way through the system and found no issues there either. He believes it would be the "headlight ballast", right behind the headlamps, that would be at fault (both of them... does this make sense?!). I've already spent close to $500 on this with no solution and my mechanic seems to be giving up - or at least he's encouraging me to live with crappy headlights.
He has another customer for which replacing the rear sensors has not worked. He is simply driving with his high beams on all the time at night, as I am now doing and have been doing for at least 6 months now.
The replacement "ballast" components are listed at over $400 per headlight, apparently. I can't stomach this. Perhaps they can be found at scrap yards. Even at that, I am unsure this would fix the issue.
It is overengineering at its absolute worst. Ridiculous. My parents have a 9-5 on which the rear gravity sensors were replaced as well, as driving in snow, they often get damaged. At least for them, that fixed the issue.
Any ideas? If I were to look for replacement "ballasts", would you have an idea as to where to get them, what the part # could be and how much they should cost?
I hope very few of you have gone through this nightmare, and if you have, would be very grateful for your help on this. I'm thinking of selling the car, that's how agravated I am. People flash their high beams at me because I am blinding them. Without using my high beams, my foglamps actually provide better forward vision than the headlamps (which is saying something!), and with the high beams on, since they are pointed somewhat lower than they should be, driving on dark, country roads has become a pain.
Good luck with this issue, and thanks in advance to those who can offer some assistance to all of us who are "in the dark"!
Brgds,
Jeff
