You can leave the head on. You will still have to pull the pan and undo all the mounts to push the engine over far enough to get the cover past the crankshaft. The spot where they leak is very difficult to get clean. You will see it is a dark area where the sealer failed and it's under the head so you have to use little bits of emery cloth and a mirror to clean the old sealer off. That part is easier with the head off.
