Hi, been here quite some time on the C900 boards, but recently purchased a 2003 9-5 linear. It had a clean carfax and only 62,000 miles! Well, as I've just come to find out (by way of a small LKQ stamp on the block up under the exhaust manifold), the engine has been replaced at some point. Still not a huge thing as I got it for a good enough price and it seemed to run decently.
However, driving to work a couple weeks ago, I felt it lose power as I was getting on the interstate. I looked in my rear view mirror and thought I was driving a mosquito truck. It was smoking BADLY. Still seemed to be running smooth though not much power. I was closer to work than to home, so I drive it another 8-10 minutes like that.
I thought it might be the turbo and boy was I right! It was pretty much destroyed. The intake side impeller gouged itself into the casing and the shaft snapped. The brass bearing(?) in the turbo ground itself to dust and the engine oil had a gold glint to it. It was kind of a cool color actually... I dropped the oil pan (and replaced all 6 subframe bushings in the process) and to my horror found a LOT of metal. I'm hopeful that it was the pieces of the turbo since it was all brass shavings and that nothing major got into the engine. I've spent the last 2 weeks doing my best to clean all the contaminated oil out everything!
I've gotten a rebuilt turbo, a replacement intercooler (since mine was filled with oil), flushed the oil cooler, cleaned the top and bottom halves of the engine and finally have most everything back together except the turbo.
I'm a little nervous about this last part because I really don't want to screw up this freshly rebuilt turbo. So whats the best way to go about pre-lubing it? I've read about pulling the DIC and fuel pump fuse and cranking the engine a few times to get the oil flowing, but should I try to put oil directly in the turbo before installing it?
Thanks
