After 8 years of owning my '04 Arc, I finally went out to put this electronic stability control stuff to work, and was I impressed. My wife usually drives it and recent indicated a substantial preference to it over our 4WD pickup for dealing with snow. Recalling my younger days and all the fun it used to be to play with the rear wheel drives on abandon slippery streets, I wanted to see what the SAAB, with studded snow tires, would do. For the life of me, I could not get the car to go sideways, it takes over even before I think I'd even start to skid and goes strait to where the wheels are pointing, which is usually where I want to be. I'm sure there are limits, still dependent of the wheels having some level of friction, But I could not find it on flat snow packed roads. Wonder what it would do on a frozen lake, except there don't seem to be too many of them this year. Just felt like commenting on this, I sure can see where this technology has reduced accidents and serious injury.
