Xenon experiment gone awry (long) Posted by pfrank [Email] (#549) [Profile/Gallery] (more from pfrank) on Thu, 15 Mar 2012 10:44:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Both of my Xenon controllers failed last year within a week of each other. Now, just over a year later, another one has failed (headlight not coming on, switching sides verifies controller problem and not bulb). Seems like there is no (or very limited) stock of the Saab part, so a search for the brand and number of the controller (Valeo LAD5G) showed a lot of activity on other boards (especially some Audi ones) with alternate sources. Seems like a Mopar 68019173AA was a cross to the LAD5G so I bought a new one from an online Mopar source at a price that used Saab units go for on an auction site.
When I received it, sure enough, it was a Valeo LAD5G. Most of the other numbers on the controller were different from the original Saab parts, but I attributed this to Mopar part numbers or lot/serial numbers.
However, when installed, the side with the Mopar controller lights the bulb, but then motors down to a low position (although not all the way down). I also get a leveling fault light on the dashboard. Switching the controller left to right confirms that it is a controller issue and not a ride height sensor (or other) problem.
Looking again at the numbers on the controllers, all four of my Saab units (the two original and the two replacements from last year) show two values "S:12:11" and "H:02.0B", while the Mopar unit shows "S:02:12" and "H:02.0B". Perhaps these values have something to do with the initial setting of the bulb leveling system. Does anyone know?
At the very least, let this serve as a warning to anyone contemplating doing what I have done. There may be different flavors of Valeo LAD5G controllers out there!
