Trailer wiring suggestions, 2000 9-5

I'm about to put a Draw Tite hitch on my 2000 9-5 for towing the motorcycle. I've seen some posts on here about the Saab plug and play trailer harness, but at $150, it's more than the hitch. I've also seen recommendations from manufactures of trailer harness' that say you should use a powered modulator due to the cars "light out" warning system. This makes the trailer lights run from battery power, NOT the cars tail light wiring themselves which would create a power draw. Not sure if that's just them trying to sell you the $50 extra.
So just wondering what some of you have done. I have no problem doing wiring and always do it correctly. Soldered and shrink wrapped. I haven't looked yet, but assume the Saab requires the adapter to bring it down to 3 wires?? I guess my bigger concern is if the car does in fact need the trailer to be powered directly from the battery.
Thanks for the help!
