9-5 Aero -low on oil but no oil light on dash

Had my 2001 9-5 Aero sedan in for an oil change, and while there had the tech check a slight clicking noise that got faster with engine speed. Turns out the car was very low on oil, such that (they said) it was struggling to push oil to the top of the engine. Once oil was changed and refilled, noise vanished.
I don't ordinarily check the oil more than once in while, as I figured that the low oil light on the dash would me know if I was a bit low. Tech said it really is there to warn against a more or less "dangerously low" oil level. News to me if that's true.
The tech said he was sure there was no engine damage as a result of the car's temporary low oil level. On previous Saabs I've owned, I'm fairly certain that when the low oil indicator came on, I just got a quart of oil and filled it back up to the mark in the dipstick.
What's the collective take on this?
