Vic, Gene, and all - Thanks for help / feedback. Installation is done, and car runs fine again. Used Bosche / Walbro insert w. Gates submersible fuel line - 2 clamps on the pump end to be sure of seal at the 6mm barb fitting.

Notes: 1) If I had to do it again, I think I would order a BMW motorcycle submersible fuel line kit - 1 foot of Gates fuel line was $28 at NAPA, and clamps were extra. 2) Tips on making special wrench for the outer retaining ring were very helpful - I stacked up a pair of shelf brackets and screwed them together, then used a Vise Grip pliers at the corner as shown in recent post. 3) In 2012 my '99 9-5 finally got the safety recall fuel line retainer installed !
