TD04 Shaft Play

I recently picked up a pair of TD04 turbos from the 'bay. My 6cm2 has no shaft play and feels very tight, my 5cm2 has some end to end play (axial?) Is that a definite need for rebuilding, or is there an acceptable level of play? (I've heard conflicting answers around the internet)
If it needs rebuilding I'm torn between risking it myself and putting a ton of time/effort into it, or finding a reputable rebuilder that wont drain the bank. (or worst case, return it to the seller who didn't disclose shaft play)
Any help is appreciated.
