If it is like the 9000 headlight wiper there is a diode in series with the motor and a relay. There is also a switch in the unit that supposed to open when the arm is in the rest position but keeps the motor running until its in the rest position when there is no power from the relay. The diode is to prevent that power from feeding back to the relay while the arm goes to the rest position after the wipers are turned off by the relay.
I learned this the hard way some years ago when I was driving along and suddenly all (windshield and headlight) wipers and washers came on and the only way I was able to stop them was to pull a fuse. A diode had shorted on one headlight washer.
