Thermostat may have been closed the entire trip. While the cars in motion regular ambient air and oil would have been sufficient to keep the motor cool, its when a car comes to a stop from a good run (like a 3hr drive) is when it will be the hottest the car ever gets.
Be thank-full the thermostat gasket decided to blow because` the head gasket, or water pump would of went if the thermostat didn't. Might want to play the lottery because you don't ever hear about a thermostat gasket blowing because its the head or water pump that goes first, for some reason luck was on your side.

However that brings me to the situation of why the thermostat was frozen in the first place.

Take this hypotetical reason for excample. Your previouse drive with the car (before the 3hr trip) say the radiator has become faulty or cloged which recked the thermostat and the car was parked. Next trip was the hwy drive. Which involved the thermostat gasket blowing.

Just a clogged radiator would be sufficient to build the pressure in the system to blow the gasket and the thermostat was fine in all this.

Personally Id get the entire coolant system flushed and check for a faulty radiator, and check the cooling fans to see if they turn on, your cooling fan switch may be faulty.

Blowing the thermostat gasket was the out come of the problem, if you don't locate the problem then next thing that will go may be the head gasket or the water pump.

Well thats just my 2cents
