The shift selector advances/retracts the core in the shift cable. The other end of this core is attached to a short actuator arm (1-1/2 to 2 inches long) bolted to the actuator rod extending thru the top side of the transmission case, imparting a rotary action on this rod.
The rod has a flat section exposed above the case. The NSS switch slides down this rod when it is installed and the flat section slips into a D-shaped receiver dead center in the NSS. As the rod rotates the mating core rotates too which is what causes the wipers inside the NSS assembly to move.
