I was contemplating selling my '01 SAAB 9-5 SE (V6) in January so I took it to a repair shop specializing in SAABs and asked them to give it a once-over to tell me what it would cost to fix whatever was wrong.
The most expensive item was the blend door repair (2000 USD).
Then there was 120K service plus some other misc stuff.
The owner told me he wasn't sure if he would keep it based on his estimates.
I bought the 120K parts myself from Amazon and Ebay although I have yet to do the maintenance. I repaired the blend door myself. I changed oil and ATF myself (the ATF was in horrible state and stunk burned real bad so recommend you check yours). I had to get new tires.
In summary, I chose to keep it because I like the cabin layout and the way it drives. Parts don't seem too hard to find if you are a savvy shopper. The SAAB owners are pretty fanatical so there are good support forums available.
With all that being said, if it were my money to do all over again, I would not buy a car whose company just went out of business and doesn't appear to have a chance of being saved by anyone else. Just a common sense recommendation given we don't know how things will change down the road and SAABs have always been a very small market and little-known car in USA so the possibility of the parts and support situation getting worse rather than better seems the better bet. Hope I didn't upset anyone here with that pessimistic thought.
