Most SEs are V6s, unless it is a model year 1999, where it could be a 4, in which case it has a timing chain, and the following doesn't apply...
If this one is a V6, your friend DEFINITELY needs to find out if the timing belt/tensioner and pulleys were done. They are supposed to be done at 60k miles. This is on the "must do" list. Also, an SE is at least 11 years old now (The SE designation was dropped for the 2002 MY, and replaced with "Arc"), so if the original timing belt is in there, it's on borrowed time. If they can't conclusively prove that it was done, get it done, and they'll get years of service from the motor.
BTW, having the t-belt changed alone is NOT good enough. It should have been, but it's been shown that the tensioner & idler pulleys often (very often) cannot go more than 60k.
I'm on my second V6. The first was a 2002 Arc that I bought with over 80k miles. I very gingerly drove it straight to my Saab Specialist, as there were no records on the belt & pulleys being changed. My current car, a 2000 SE, had the original belt done under warranty, but only the belt. I opted to have the full belt, pulleys & water pump done so I would not need to worry about it for another 60k miles.
Regarding the water pump on the V6: It can be changed or not with the timing belt (and v-v), but prevailing wisdom is to replace it at least every second T-belt, whether it needs it or not. The labor just to access the water pump is the same as it is to access the T-belt, and believe me, most of what you pay for is labor! Also, my mechanic changed his t-belt & pulleys, then the water pump blew up, and the leak caused the t-belt to skip a tooth someplace, so he had to go in for a THIRD time.
