P1312 is just malfunctioning of misfire detection circuitry - the DIC still ignites the mixture just fine and there are no misfires.

Older versions of DIC indeed could damage the cat by not igniting the fuel.

By the way, the new DIC is $350 shipped from NeoBrothers in UK and it takes just 5 minutes to replace. If you never did any car repair this one is the best to start - no tools required other that a torx screw driver from the tool kit in the car.

No particular need to replace the spark plugs when replacing DIC - just wait for your regular maintenance interval.
