Doesn't sound like the shop is very eager to help you OR? The problem is not present when the shop is looking at the car and can therefore only guess what's happening.
You also don't give us much meat to work on as far as the problems goes but I assume you are talking about a NO START condition and not about a NO CRANKING condition.
If the engine is NOT starting/firing up but the starter is cranking over the engine easily, it is a matter of checking to see if fuel is present at fuel rail and/or ignition/spark is up and running. But if the problem is not there when the shop have the car, it could be tough to pinpoint.
