I think leasing makes sense if you want a new car in 3 years, or don't plan to drive over the 12,000 or 15,000 miles per year the lease includes. Yes, you should negotiate the price of the car first, don't let them know you have a trade in, and then work from there. You'll probably do better selling on your own, but sometimes it saves so much time and hassle to trade it in that it's worth it.
But even if you get a great price from someone, check out at least two other dealers -- and although there should not be any difference, I'd try and buy from the same place I'm going to have it serviced. I feel I get a little better treatment that way (particulalry with loaners).
I just make sure all my work is done by the Saab service, and can only hope that I don't have too much wrong at lease end. The good news is all the normal maintenance will be covered over the life of a 3 year lease, and the out of the ordinary stuff is probably warranty work. If you are going to get into to a new Saab at the end of this lease, then I'd imagine you'd have some leverage with any issues they want fixed (they'll probably overlook some things if you are jumping into something new from them).
