LOUD knocking...

This post is for a '92 9-5 Aero, 120k miles on the clock. Have not owned the car since new, but it was checked for sludge. Had the oil pump replaced and pick up screen cleaned. Been running 5w-30 full synthetic for 60k miles or so. No real problems to report.
Was driving up a steep hill outside Boulder (I live there now), hit the sport button to get around a garbage sow, and noticed the onset of a new sound:
Loud, nerve-wracking KNOCK, sounds to be coming from one cylinder, as it is distinct at all RPM's,and seems to be coming from the #1 cylinder side. It is MUCH louder under load, much quieter in neutral. Never goes away, unless the car is off. No change in knock pattern, either warm or cool, at startup or after running for some minutes. At rest, in neutral, if I rev the motor a bit and then let off, the knock seems to disappear at the top of the rev, just as the motor starts to slow again.
Does not sound like the timing chain (bag of nickels), does not sound like dry top-end (more like a constant diesel sound), does not sound like pulleys or serp belt problems (had 'em all before).
Trying to distinguish between broken exhaust stud/cracked manifold and rod/bearing noise.
Any thoughts on home diagnosis, and does anyone know of a good indie mechanic in the Boulder, CO area?
Thanks in advance for your help!!
