Maybe different cars react differently. When my fuel pump died the tach needle moved quite a bit during cranking - so I immediately ruled out the CPS (and the starting fluid test confirmed that my DIC was also working fine).
Normally you do not see it move because the engine catches so quickly. But you can see whether it should move (during prolonged cranking) or not on your car by pulling the fuel pump fuse when the car is cold and try to crank it then and observe the needle.
