Often a timing cover leak is mistaken for a crank seal. The problem with new style pcv valve is that they fail internally before they break completely thus allowing boost pressure into the crankcase and causing a timing cover leak. The front crank seals on these cars don't leak. The only time I ever replace them is when I'm resealing the timing cover and I don't always do that.
