If solid debris pass through the engine, when it hits the turbine, it causes damage. But the spinning turbine throws the part back into the exhaust manifold then the metal comes back for more impacts. Pieces of broken turbine vanes then join the party. In a non-intercooled application, larger debris can damage the turbine.
