I have always gone with just the metal pump,not the whole assembly. Once the fuel pump assembly is out,it is about a 20 minute job to take it apart and replace it.
Definitely be careful with the tabs up top. I push a screwdriver in from the side and then start pulling up just as the locking tab starts to clear. the tubes are usually tight and take a bit of gentle wiggling to free up.
Your job will be easier if you replace the whole assembly, but I can do my cars pump for $45
