There two things in the starter assembly:
* motor
* solenoid
The latter (solenoid) performs two functions:
* mechanically move the motor spur gear to engage the teeth on the flywheel
* move the contacts to electrically connect the battery to the starter
The contact pads inside are very heavy duty - capable of switching ~200A of DC current. Unfortunately due to this high current they do wear out and when it happens completing the circuit becomes intermittent.
