If possible, check and top up the electrolyte level with distilled water. Do not over fill. Avoid batteries where you cannot monitor or service the electrolyte levels. Dry cells can cause batteries to explode.
If a cell shorts out or goes open circuit, there can be no warning.
If a battery is not able to crank and you charge it up, pull the caps and look at what is happening. If some cells bubble vigorously and one is not bubbling, perhaps very little, the one without bubbles is shorted. The remaining cells now see a charging voltage that is 6/5 times too high and they are over charging. If no cells bubble, then one of the cells is open circuit; one of the internal solder welds has failed. This last type of failure can happen at any time and new batteries can fail. That is a process control problem. The failed weld will be wet with acid. A digital volt meter will probably show a full voltage, but the battery cannot deliver a current.
A battery that will not crank at 0 F degrees may have a couple of good years left in it in a climate with mild winters. Batteries seem to be good for 5 years in Kansas with our I4 Aero's. That is with low miles per year.
