manual tranny problems

Hi guys, would appreciate some help. I have a 2004 9-5 Arc, manual transmission, and left my car today in a NYC parking garage. Came back, and whatever they did (nothing, they claim!) in moving the car 50 feet to park it, the gearbox seems busted and I can only put the shifter into 3rd or 4th. Can't get it into reverse (but I can get the key out in roughly that position). I can still drive it, and it smells of something; I dont think a manual tranny has gearbox fluid? Smells like cooolant.
Thoughts? Gearbox is dead, or its just a linkage problem? Or these guys damaged it trying to jam it into reverse without lifting the gear-stick outer "handle". And how far do I dare drive it tomorrow?
Appreciate it!!!
