multimeter should be on dc volts. You are looking for 12 volts to run pump. You might find a reference searching the archives to see if someone has identified the wires, but red is usually hot and black ground.
Can also remove pump from car - be careful with fuel line connectors, as they can be easily broken. I would suggest spraying with penetrating fluid to make them easier to get apart (voice of experience, as I snapped one trying to get it apart) Once pump is out, you can power it "briefly" to see if it runs. On mine, I had already purchased the replacement pump, (I bought the whole assembly, but others have just purchased the motor, which is significantly cheaper, but you have to make in tank fuel line connections, which I chose not to do). I also replaced CPS at same time, so ultimately not sure the pump was bad (although the can get dead spots, so rotating the motor can move it off the dead spot on the armature, causing it to run (it will eventually end up on the dead spot again, so time to repair or replace if that is the case.
