As I think Jeff meant to say, remove the black cap and the nut. I purchased a windshield wiper puller (any auto parts store should have one) rather than use the ball joint separator. If the wiper arms have been off recently, the ball joint tool is fine, but danger of cracking the windshield when you pry the arm off if you are not careful.
I don't recall a particular problem with the circlip on the brake pedal shaft.
Getting the booster out was tricky, but the brake lines flex enough that following the instructions and unbolting the items noted allows enough room to get the booster out.
I had more trouble getting it back in, with the linkage arm properly adjusted. I ended up threading on the linkage arm once the booster was positioned in place, but then had trouble getting the length correct. Before you detach the linkage arm, check where the brake light switch is and how it is actuated. If the arm is not adjusted properly, the brake light will be one with no pressure applied to the pedal. Other than that, it is relatively straightforward, and I did not have to do anything to the hydraulic system.
