Its a temp gauge alright, its that the default ECU programming that dumbs it down. By default anything between 83°C and 115°C is shown as horizontal on the gauge. This turns the gauge into an idiot light. The nice part about this is that you dont see all of the minor fluctuations in engine temp. the downside is that if the engine is overheating the gauge will immediately go from horizontal to overheat without much warning.
It's programmed with a tech II. I had my indy change the "horizontal high temp" to 90 deg C, so that as the engine temp rises the gauge responds normally. This restores the functionality of the gauge and will give me a warning that the engine is getting hot.
Note that I only had the "horiz high temp changed". I'm not concerned about "underheating" so the cold side of the deadband is still there. Basically once it warms up to 83 deg the gauge goes horizontal.
If you want to eliminate the deadband altogether set both "horizontal low temp" and "horizontal high temp" to the same temp (90 usually)
