Body work is egregiously expensive. It matters not if the frame needs straightening. I had someone sideswipe my 2000 SE. They managed to take out ONLY the driver door. Total bill for replacement of the door (no repair, replacement with a used door), paint to match (Imola Red), reinstall all accessories, etc. came to over $2,200...
My 1999 LPT. I hit a small bear. Relatively minor damage: hood, grille, radiator, AC condenser, headlamps, bumper cover. Oh, and both front airbags (meaning the dash pad too). Total loss, just for the airbags alone, and it was borderline even if you took the bags out of the equation.
Remember, a "Total loss" has nothing to do with the absolute amount of repairs needed, or whether they are difficult, but it has everything to do with how much those repairs would cost in parts and labor versus the book value of the car. Which is why you can very nearly remove the front end of a new Bimmer, and have it repaired, yet just get a slight sideswipe in a 2000 Saab and have it totaled.
