I think that if one reads enough saabnet postings on the V6, one gets a pretty balanced perception on it - for every "real saabs have 4 cyls" there is an informative post from Larry West, or B Millar... The V6 is still a good car and the 4 has had it's issues also... either one has things to keep on top of.
That said, the "hysteria" extends out of Saabnet - my saab indy is not keen on the V6 at all due to parts costs/availability (and probably ease of repair/room to work), and with fewer on the road, there are fewer junk yard parts options as these cars age. I think that is a valid consideration, so I would say that "hysteria" is a strong way of putting it. There are many good reasons to choose a 4 over a 6. I don't doubt one could really enjoy a V6 if one goes in with the right attitude (and there is a lot of good advice here to help one do that from people who have)... actually, that could be said for all saabs... if you go into it treating it as a Toyota or a V8 domestic product, probably the ownership experience is going to disappoint...
