+1 on the needle nose pliers suggestion.
I did the same to get snap ring off the Mitsubishi turbo I was rebuilding for my Aero. Hunted for large snap ring pliers, and finally took HF pair of needle nose pliers with 90 degree bend.....the big ones that are 12" or so long......to the bench grinder and sharpened them up a bit to fit the snap ring hole.
With this mod they work like a charm. And you have not ruined them for other usage. The long handles give you plenty of leverage to compress the ring, and the solid pivot means no torsional bending of the arms.
