you are correct, the transponder is in the key and that is what you are programming. as jeff points out, you can program multiple sets of "guts" with only 1 working mechanical key.
What year is the car? if it is the older thin shaft style, there is an ilco blank which your locksmith can get and cut if he is competent at automotive work. you could saw the shaft off the badly cut mechanical saab key and use that as a "transponder fob" to get you through your trip. actually, you can get a transponder key from ilco also, but I have no idea how well those work.
I have a car that uses the thick shaft and it is not so easy for that. There were no thick shaft ilco blanks last I checked (a bit over a year ago)...
