I had the same issue on my 2002 9-5 Aero SW with manual transmission. I had the parts to repair it, but could not get to the 2 uppermost screws up inside the dashboard. I'm 6'2" and it was a tight fit. I also spent about 2 hours and numerous curse-words before throwing in the towel (1st time that ever happened). Removing an under-dash brace gives you some more room, but not enough in my case.
I took it to my local Saab specialist who has 1 particularly small and lithe technician who can do the repair. Money well spent, IMHO. It's possible, but a real PITA.
Good luck - JMJ
