Major Coolant Leak - HELP!

My wife was driving the car today and about 10 minutes from home, heard a noise and noticed the SID message to "Fill Coolant". She got home and did not remember to mention it to me. Anyway, she had to then drive to the nearby store and when she got home, I noticed a significant about of smoke or steam coming out from the front of the car (mostly on the driver side). The smoke had a "sweet" smell to it. Upon opening the hood, I noticed that the coolant reservoir was completely empty and there was coolant all over the inside of the engine bay. When I turned on the car (without starting the engine), the temp gauge was at the normal operating temperature. Questions:
1. What could be possible problems? Radiator, Water Pump? It was too dark for me to see much.
2. Will I be able to drive it to the shop and what should I do to prevent any damage to the engine?
3. Would there be any permanent damage to the engine given she drove for 10-20 minutes after the initial failure?
The temperature outside is around 0 Celcius. The car is a 2002 95 Linear with 145,000 kms.
Please help.
Thanks, Simon
