Reverse in the 9-5, 9-3, and NG 900 is a full synchro gear, just like the forward ones. Unfortunately it is also quite fragile, I hear. Once the "points" get worn off the synchro rings, engaging from a dead stop becomes a problem, be it first gear or reverse. A dragging clutch also can cause the synchros to "balk". Don't ever force it, as the result can be a handful of little teeth in the bottom of the gearbox.
I don't think there's any kind of spring involved, other than the one associated with the synchro.
