Even though 6 cylinders are known not to have the sludging issue it might be the case, because one thing the 6 cylinder has that the same as the 4 cylinder is the very fine pick up screen. You can use Swedecars method of checking it consists of bending a coat hanger and sticking it into the oil drain hole and scraping the inside bottom of the oil pan, when pulling it out the hanger will have a gunk on it, if it comes out with a bunch of gunk very good chance the oil pick up screen if full of sludge.
wheres a pic,.... let me look ..,,, oh` look I need more pop corn ,.brb

What your l;ooking at in the image is the pick up screen with whats called sludge on it, its a baked oil, crispy chard block of gunk that will not come off unless physically cleaned off with what I like to use `a finger nail. Now it is said 6 cylinders do not have this sludging problem, however one thing the 6 cylinders have the same as the 4 cylinders is the very fine screen mesh over the pick up tube, and I guarantee you if I had a 9-5 6 cylinder and never changed the oil in 50,000 miles the car will have sludging.

Buying a car with many miles on it one has no clue what the previous owner has done to the car,. did the previous owner know they where going to trade in the car for a brand new one and think whats the point in changing the oil, my bro. thinks this exact way. he will ride out the oil in the car as long as humanly possible then sell it. Personally I`m the exact opposite, I never sell my cars, to me there like my kids.

Point being I just bought a 9-5 not to long ago with 60,000 miles on the clock and had no idea what the previous owners were like, just today I dropped the oil pan to check the car for this sludging ( it is the 4 cylinder) come to find it precious owners to immaculate care of the car for the first 60,000 miles. puts a smile on my face.

Ask your self this, how long do you intend on keeping the car, and then ask yourself would it be worth it to drop the oil pan or at the very leased bend a coat hanger to check for this sludging problem.

On a side note it might just as well be a failing pump, your mechanic told you its pushing 45psi, now was that at idle or did he increase the rpms? We all know if the rmps are increased the motor lite goes out meaning the motor is getting the oil required its just at idle its being starved.
