My 92 C900 started groaning in very cold weather a couple of years after I bought it used off a three year lease. Groaning and a pulsing feel through the wheel, thought the rack was shot. Local shop wanted $900 to replace the rack. Used the turkey blaster method to swap out old ps fluid for new several times over a few weeks and the problem went away.
New fluid contains solvents that keep the rubber seals soft, that was all that was needed. Ran that car another 175,000 miles without a problem from either the pump or the rack.
Did the same procedure on the manual transmission, pumping out a quart or so of oil from the transmission fill port with each oil change and replacing with required motor oil (10-30?) and that tranny ran up to 225,000 miles until I sold it without the typical pinion gear failure. Next owner was still running it with no problems years later with this method.
As Dad once said, oil (or ps fluid) is cheaper than parts.
