Brake Booster Posted by Gene N [Email] (#1094) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gene N) on Mon, 4 Mar 2013 05:30:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 2002 Aero (automatic) brake booster started hissing last week. I bought the car a couple of months ago with 102K miles, and the booster appears to be the original. I checked the booster for oil and there didn't seem to be any when I pushed a wood stirrer down through the hole were the vacuum pipe attaches. I also blew through the hose that connects to the camshaft-driven vacuum pump, and the check valve in the line is still working. So I only ordered a new booster and I will put it in next weekend.
The same thing happened on my 1999 Linear at 11 years and 180K miles. No oil in the booster (electric vacuum pump) and it just started hissing. Replacing the booster cured the problem. My neighbor has a 2003 Aero and I saw him at a Christmas Party last year, and his booster had just failed.
My question is, what is the deal with ATE? I've had a dozen cars in my life, most of them 10 years old and at least 5 of them over 200K miles, and the only ones that ever needed a brake booster were my 2 9-5s. Throw in my neighbor and it just seems odd that a part that hardly ever needs to be replaced on other cars, fails so regularly. Granted, my sample set is small, and I'm sure I'll get at least 10 "my car has a million miles and I never had to change the booster" responses, but for me, the booster, like the recirculation arm in the heater box that I replaced on both cars, seems like an odd problem to have.
Still love the car, though.
