The problem is taken care of if you purchase winter tires & rims. I have a second set of 17" '01 Aero rims for my Aero wagon upon which are mounted 17" winter tires. During the winter one of my OEM wheel/tire is my spare and in the summer it is one of the winter wheel/tire. It fits fine in the wagon because the floor of the wagon is raised several inches creating more than enough room for the wide wheel. Earlier posts on this subject say that this doesn't work in the sedan.
I have found the biggest problem to be the heft of the wheel and getting it in and out of the wheel well without damaging it, your clothes or your back. I am 6'2" and at that it is still a bit of a chore, especially if the wheel is wet or dirty, which is quite likely to be the case if you have a flat. The OEM wheel/tire combo is heavy, and if you try to keep it off your clothes while you hold it out in front of you and lower it down over a 4" spike, it puts a pretty good strain on your lower back. I don't think the average woman could deal with it.
What has aggrevated me the most is that the first time I did it I laid the wheel/tire down on the bumper & floor and then slid the wheel into the well, and in the process I put a gouge across the front of the brand new alloy wheel by way of the threaded rod that stands in the center of the hole to hold the spare in place. Of course I did the same thing all over again 5 months later when I pulled the wheel out of the hole without lifting it enough to clear the rod.
All in all, though, I very much like having a full sized, real tire as a spare.
