Good news, and (very) bad news... The good news is, for 2006 - 2009 cars, yes, you can play MP3 discs.
The (very) bad news is that for you to upgrade your 2005 would require a complete, intact 2006-2009 car from which to pull everything you need.
In 2006, the 9-5 got an exterior and interior refresh. Gone was the grey CD/cassette unit, SID and ACC, in its place were a GM "global" radio with CD and XM that plays MP3s as well, SID functions were moved to the MIU, and the ACC was also changed to a GM design. This is nowhere near a simple swap, because in addition to the radio and other interior refits, the whole data bus was upgraded to a CAN bus, requiring newer components and wiring all around.
If you really need MP3 disc capability, you'll have to go aftermarket.
