The best way is to remove the complete heater bypass hose package and hook a water hose up to the pipes at firewall.
After that you could install the traditional heater hoses and get rid of that troublesome bypass valve.
But if you didn't feel up to the task of replacing the bypass valve yourself, it might be a challenge to remove it all to flush the heater core.
If the shop went through all the trouble diagnosing a blocked heater core pipe which I would assume included disconnecting the hoses from pipes, I would assume they had already tried to backflush the heatercore without success.
At least I would have tried that before giving up and telling the owner the bad news that the pipes has to be disconnected from heater core.
But even that job is not as insane on a 9-5 as it can be on other cars since you access the heater core and pipes after removing glove box compartment.
