I read several posts here about how everyone was comfortable replacing the passenger side motor mount, the motor mount under the battery tray, and the transmission mount, but it seems like most folks were leery of replacing the rear transmission mount on their own. So I tried it on my 02 9-5 linear and it wasn't tough at all. Here's what I did:
1. Drive the car up on ramps and let it cool back to ambient temp (very important), open the hood, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Loosen the top nut of the motor mount using a couple of ratchet extensions from the top of the engine.
3. With a 10mm ratchet, loosen the most exposed bottom bolt of the motor mount.
3. With a 10mm combination wrench, loosen the second-most exposed bottom bolt of the motor mount, but leave it in place because the bracket will keep it from coming out enough to remove.
4. Place a jack under the bottom of the transmission with a block of wood between the jack and the transmission and raise the jack just until it is snug.
5. With a 10mm ratchet and an extension or two and possibly a universal joint, remove the third bolt from the bottom of the motor mount. This bolt is right against the firewall.
6. Loosen the three bolts holding the mounting bracket to the transimission. Remove the top two, the top one using a deep socket and and extension, the one below it with a combination wrench. The lowest one can be loosened with a combination wrench until it touches the muffler. This is OK and it doesn't need to come out further to finish this job.
7. Reach in from under the car and try to move the bracket enough to remove the motor mount (WIS calls it a 'pad'). If it won't come out, raise the car slightly with the jack that is under the transmission and try again. Repeat this until you are able to remove the motor mount.
My motor mount was definitely in two pieces so now I am checking to see where the best price for a replacement is. So far it looks like eEuroparts is the best deal and it is Hutchinson/OEM.
Anyhow, I wanted to encourage others that they can do this. It is easier than the alternator or turbo, in my opinion. -JerryC
